A How to on Motivation - Motivate yourself!

Throughout this website, we talk about strategies to improve areas of our lives. We explore the power of beliefs and their governing nature, we explore the things we must do, everyday to gain and maintain happiness a large amount of the time and there are a lot of sections within my articles that encourage you to step up in your life, to really defy the odds and become who you want to become! However, what we really have not touched on is the art of self motivation. You could have your beliefs aligned, your values in order, you could even know exactly how to get to your outcome, whatever goal or goals you want to achieve, but without a recipe for motivation, let's face it, you may not push yourself to take action. In this article, we will talk about how to, in what order, create certain thoughts, and use your body a certain way in order to stimulate your motivation muscles.

The first thing I want to discuss with you is the creation of motivating thoughts. I'm sure we all can agree that when it comes to getting motivated, the thoughts that primarily take place in our minds have nothing to do with pumping us up, they're more like "I don't feel like it, maybe I'll do it later, I can't get motivated," etc.. but those thoughts block pathways of information in your neurological circuitry, literally. When you say for example, the famous "I can't" and you believe it, your nervous system understands your message, and as a result, you will not fire off the neurons in your brain necessary to access resourceful parts of your mind, like your creative side for example. The reason we say things like "I don't feel like it, or maybe I'll do it later," is because we haven't yet seen the rewards for being motivated and getting something DONE, accomplishing a major task. Here is a secret about the way that you operate that you should use everyday: You don't look at something any further than your beliefs let you. Until you consciously direct your beliefs by consistently changing your conscious thoughts to reflect the belief that would support you (I can do this, I can motivate myself, I can achieve my goals), your beliefs will always govern, or let's say LIMIT your actions. Does this make sense to you? I know it does. A lot of what we talk about on Power of a Positive Mind is fundamental stuff, that we all know intellectually, but seldom apply.

With that being said, we need a strategy to get motivated. We need a strategy to send a signal to the brain that says "the reward is worth getting motivated and taking action," and here is how this is done.

  1. See the reward before you take the action You've got to actually see the rewards for your work. Often times, and I know you can agree with me on this, as soon as we think about something we want to do, those thoughts come into play that go something like "you can't do it, it isn't possible, you've never done it before, remember what that person said" and so on. So the trick is to think past those limiting thoughts and the best way to send your brain the right signals is to engineer the reward in your mind first. Allot yourself 2 ten minute increments throughout your day to sit down, relax and calm your mind. As you start to calm your mind, begin to picture what it would be like if you had already achieved this goal.

  2. As you begin to imagine this in your mind, engage all of your senses. Really SEE what it would be like. Use as many details as possible. Use colors, and make them bright. Have clarity, and see things clear. Hear what others around you will be saying about you accomplishing your goal and most importantly, FEEL what this feels like. Really put yourself at the completion of your task.

  3. Jolt to yourself that you're going to make this happen, no matter what it is, within reason. I don't mean positive affirmations, NO, I mean something I learned from Napoleon Hill, something that has been passed on through the generations, enhanced by authorities like Anthony Robbins and is one of the most effective tools for directing your own subconscious mind. These are what I call simply Powerful Statements. For example: "I am going to get this raise.," or "I will become a ______ because I deserve to be a ______ and it is more than possible for me." The important part of this is to extract the statements from your busy head and say them out loud. When you do, insert as much emotion as you can. For example, if you wanted to improve your body, say your statement but really allow yourself to mean it. Get serious, step up and feel it, make it intense.

  4. Lastly, your physiology. Physiology is another way of saying the quality of your movements, breathing, body structure etc. Your brain will get the motivation signal if you put your body in an intense state. If you tighten up your muscles, clench a fist and breath deep, with your head up and you stomp on the ground as if you were in charge, your nervous system looks through files and finds what you have associated to that physiology, and everyone in the world associates that to a pretty intense state. As a result, the nerve impulses will travel, your brain will get the message and you will immediately be brought into a good neurophysiological position. (which just means your mind and body will be congruently and intensely pumped). Remember, your body and your brain are one. Whichever way one feels, the other picks up on and says "OK, this is how we feel, got it."

Using these steps will do many things, all beneficial. You will have a closer look at the rewards for getting yourself motivated and taking action. This has the power to destroy the old beliefs of limitation and will allow you to access the information necessary within your nervous system to take extraordinary action. This is what every successful person does. This is how people make great things happen. Think about all of the things in Disney World right now. Though Walt is not around to see all of it now, he saw it before it was actually there. Goals and dreams are accomplished first in the world in which you live on the inside. Everything starts there. This is your chance to create your life the way you want it to be. Generate the kinds of circumstances you want in your mind, get clarity, get clear, get motivated and get excited. Now, after reading this article, you are armed with the knowledge necessary to create motivation within yourself. Once you learn and apply this motivation strategy, your life will change, I guarantee you. It isn't because I'm so smart, this is simply using what your creator gave to you the way it was intended to be used. You're on this page for a reason, take charge, make life happen.
